Lieutenant Governor of Ontario visits Keewaywin

His Hon. James K. Bartleman arrived in Keewwayin on Tuesday January 13th,2004, with NAN Chief Stan Beardy to learn and tour the facilities of our community.

They arrived at the band office where they had a meeting with the chief and council discussing how the community came about and what the name of Keewaywin meant to the people.

Next stop was at the Keewaywin school where we were met by the education director who gave a tour of the school and classrooms, the student also gave a performance of break dancing. The Lieutentant Governor also checked out the school library and donated books for the library, and also met one of our oldest living elder Donald Kakegamic.

The internet high school was next on the agenda where he asked Frieda Kenny about the school programs the curriculum and how the students interact with other teachers through the internet.

The Ecentre and the Keewaywin library was visted next where his honour signed and donated one of his books to the public library which tells of his childhood and his struggles through the years of his life. With promises of donating more books for the public library.

Our last stop was looking in at the Health Clinic where he met the staff and the Health Director and looked at our teleconferencing unit where he met our  K.O. staff Ida Fiddler.

It was a good visit we learned much about his honour and how his role as Lieutentant Governor would benefit the First Nations. Books which is scarce in our community would benefit our community with donations for our public library.
